DRACHTEN, NED – World Champion Marleen Veldhuis highlighted the Dutch short course Nationals in Drachten, setting a new Dutch record in the 200 freestyle, 1:56,50. Just returned from the short course Europeans, she also won the 50 (24,57) and 100 freestyle (53,50).

Several junior swimmers surfaced in this post-Olympic season, among them 14-year old Ranomi Kromowidjojo. She finished second in the 50 freestyle, setting a new age group record in 25,60. Other new stars in the freestyle evens were Femke Heemskerk, 17, (100m: 55,63; 200m: 2:00,19) and Linda Bank, 18, (200m: 1:59,95; 400m: 4:13,99).

Hinkelien Scheuder was the most successful female swimmer, winning four individual events (50 and 100 backstroke and 200 and 400 IM).

Bastiaan Tamminga used his great dolphin kick to win four events on the men’s side, the 50 and 100 backstroke and 50 and 100 butterfly. 17-year old Nick Driebergen swam an age group record in the 50 backstroke during the heats (25,88).

Most attention went to Alex Schelvis, 17, who clocked 15:24.33 to set a new age group record in the 1500 (also in the 800, splitting 8:05.75). He won his second gold in the 400 freestyle (3:53,95).

Three swimmers battled in the breaststroke events, 2003 European sc medallist Thijs van Valkengoed, 18-year old Lennart Stekelenburg and Robin van Aggele. Stekelenburg won the 50 in 28,13, just ahead of Van Aggele (28,18), but Van Valkengoed out-touched him in the 100 (1:00,04 tot 1:00,29). Van Valkengoed also won the 200 (2:10,23).

Van Aggele did win the 200 IM (2:01,49) and 400 IM (4:15,90).

Dutch Olympic team announced after Nationals

AMSTERDAM, April 20. THE last two days of the Dutch Nationals in Amsterdam showed some great races, but the Olympic team didn’t grow that much. No personal starts were earned; only some of the relays for Athens were completed.

The women’s 4x100 freestyle will be a great team, with Inge de Bruijn and Marleen Veldhuis as leaders. Chantal Groot is the third swimmer, with her 55,23 from Barcelona. Many other women competed for the last spot in the team, and for the reserves. Inge Dekker’s 56,05 was a great personal best time, but Annabel Kosten managed to clock 56,04 during the prelims to make her the fourth woman on the team.

Wilma van Rijn just out-touched Manon van Rooijen in the final, 56,60 to 56,75, but both members of the silver medal-winning 4x100 freestyle relay from Sydney are not likely to swim in Athens. The Dutch Swim Association hasn’t announced the final team for Athens yet. The reserves for the relay’s will be announced after the European Championships next month.

The 4x200 freestyle relay is also a strong team. Six women are ready to compete in this relay, led by US Open Champion Marleen Veldhuis. But it wasn’t Veldhuis who won this race in Amsterdam. It was Haike van Stralen who touched the pad first in 2:02,21. Veldhuis followed closely, just out-touching teammate Chantal Groot, 2:02,32 to 2:02,36. Inge Dekker finished fourth in 2:03,01, but Celina Lemmen (a freshman at SMU) already clocked 2:02,37 to make the team. Again Manon van Rooijen is not certain of making the team with her 2:03,06.

The men’s freestyle races were less successful than the women's. Thomas Felten became champion on the 200 freestyle in 1:50,97, but number two Martijn Zuijdweg who has swum 1:49 several times, wasn’t able to swim faster than 1:52,25. The bronze medal from Sydney at this relay won’t be defended in Athens, since no team can be made with swimmers incapable of making the final.

In Sydney, The Netherlands had a great 4x100m freestyle team, but the team was DQ’d because of a false start during the heats. This Olympic year, everything should go better, but getting a team together has been very difficult. Van den Hoogenband is one of the team members, together with his teammate, former backstroker Klaas Erik Zwering. In the heats of the Amsterdam Swim Cup, Mark Veens clocked 50,21 for his seasonal best, but there need to be at least four men who can swim 49 or better to make finals in Athens.

Johan Kenkhuis completed the team finishing first this weekend in 50,41 (prelims 50,36). Kenkhuis holds one of the fastest relay splits of all time, 47,89 swum in Fukuoka. If he can repeat that time, the team might have a shot at the Olympic final. Veens clocked 50,67 to finish second here. His personal best of 49,38 was set during the Olympics, but after a lot of injuries, he’s back to break that time this summer. Mitja Zastrow is still having troubles with injuries; his 50,69 was good enough for third, but did not earn a ticket for Athens yet.

The following swimmers have been selected for Athens, others might be added to his list after the European Championships.

Women: Inge de Bruijn, Marleen Veldhuis, Chantal Groot, Madelon Baans, Stefanie Luiken, Annabel Kosten, Haike van Stralen, Celina Lemmen.

Men: Pieter van den Hoogenband, Johan Kenkhuis, Thijs van Valkengoed, Joris Keizer, Klaas Erik Zwering, Mark Veens.

Dutch Nationals: Luiken swims 1:03 on backstroke

AMSTERDAM (The Netherlands) April 16 – The second day of the Dutch Nationals was Judgement day for the Olympic medley relays. Both man and women still missed a backstroker. Only the women succeeded in their mission, non of the male swimmers managed to swim under 57.

Last year, the men finished fifth in Barcelona, but backstroker Klaas Erik Zwering turned to the freestyle after he couldn’t make enough progression on the backstroke. Sander Ganzevles and Mitja Zastrow battled for the title in this event, but their times weren’t enough to compete in international competition. Ganzevles finished first just ahead of Zastrow in 57,46 to 57,53.

Head coach of the Dutch National team André Cats was disappointed for the swimmers but didn’t make a final statement about this event yet.

The women’s team is complete, after Stefanie Luiken swam 1:03,25 at this event. She approached the 20-year old Dutch record by only 0,5 seconds.

The 50 freestyle was a high quality event for both men and women, but the spots in the Olympic team are already filled by Pieter van den Hoogenband, Johan Kenkhuis, Inge de Bruijn and Marleen Veldhuis, all finalists in this event in Barcelona. VdH and Inky skipped these Championships, leaving the titles to the others.

Kenkhuis got tough competition from Mark Veens, but in the second 25 he showed Veens his heels and finished in 22,43 to 22,74 for Veens. Veldhuis had to compete with team-mate Chantal Groot and Annabel Kosten. Veldhuis showed her class by finishing first in 25,46, Kosten just out-touched Groot in 25,68 to 25,79.

The 200 breaststroke showed a great race between 2003 National Champion Melanie ten Brink, Madelon Baans and Junior Moniek Nijhuis. Baans is the fastest of the three on the 100 and turned first halfway. Ten Brink gained in the last 50, but couldn’t beat Baans who finished first in 2:34,94. Ten Brink did pass Nijhuis in the race for the second place (2:36,04 to 2:36,43).

Thijs van Valkengoed didn’t finish very well, but was far ahead of Martin de Wildt to grab the gold in 2:17,45. Robin van Aggele almost beat De Wildt, but the swimmer of PSV Eindhoven touched the pad first in 2:18,42, just 0,19 ahead of Van Aggele.

The titles in the 400 freestyle went to Edith van Dijk (4:20,39) and Thomas Felten (3:57,74).

Dutch Nationals: Groot qualifies for Athens

Amsterdam (The Netherlands) April 15 – Chantal Groot succeeded in her final attempt to qualify for an individual start in Athens during the first day of the Dutch Nationals. In the sprint freestyle events, she has to compete with Inge de Bruijn and Marleen Veldhuis and is the third Dutch woman on the ranking on both the 50 and 100. But there still was a vacancy on the 100 butterfly.

Inge Dekker and Chantal Groot battled for that last spot, Dekker placed first for the finals in 59:85. During that final, Dekker again turned first in 28,05 but had to give the last few meters to Groot who finished just ahead of Dekker, 1:00,18 to 1:00,24. Groot swam 59:58 in Barcelona, based on that time she takes the second spot in the team for Athens, Inky already qualified two weeks ago.

After the IOC refused to make the Open Water Swimming Olympic, 25km World Champion Edith van Dijk tried to make the team in the 800 freestyle. But with only a few months preparation in a swimming pool, she failed to make the cut. After clocking a personal best of 8:50,80, Van Dijk decided to return to the Open Water arena to compete at the Europeans in Madrid next month and the World Open Water Championships in November.

The first day of the Dutch Nationals showed no other serious attempts to make the qualification cut for Athens but there were several nice races in Amsterdam. Stefan Aartsen battled with Bastiaan Tamminga for the title on the 100 butterfly, Tamminga led halfway but Aartsen, specialist in the 200 fly, was the best in keeping the pace in the second 50 (54,75).

Robin van Aggele cruised to 4:25,40 in the 400 IM, far ahead of the rest of the field. Tamar Bakker won the womans 400 IM in 5:04,59. Maarten van der Weijden easily won the 800 freestyle in 8:23,49, over 22 seconds faster than the rest of the field. Rieneke Schinkel (2:17,13) and Sander Ganzevles (2:02,23) grabbed the gold in the 200 backstroke.

Inky Swims 54.09 100m Free on Final day of ASC

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands, April 4. NOW it's certain: Inge de Bruijn is on track for the Olympics. During the final of the 100 freestyle of the last day of the Amsterdam Swim Cup, De Bruijn won the dual with Marleen Veldhuis and swam an impressive 54.09, after turning in 25.95. Inky hadn't been this fast since Sydney.

Veldhuis also swam a great time, clocking 54.87 after a split of 26.32 -- again a personal best time for the A finalist in Barcelona. Last December she became US Open Champion on this event. Number three in Amsterdam was Chantal Groot, who touched the pad in 56.13, just ahead of Inge Dekker (56.25), Paulina Barzycka (56.28) from Poland and Annabel Kosten (56.39).

Therese Alshammar scratched the 100 freestyle, in favor of the 50
backstroke. The Swedish sprinter finished first in 29.97, just ahead of Stephanie Luiken (30.26) and Hinkelien Schreuder (30.57) from PSV Eindhoven.

Aleksandra Urbanczyk from Poland won the 400 IM, far ahead of the rest of the field (4:50.91). Not surprisingly, her teammate Otylia Jedrzejczak, world record-holder and 2003 world champion, won the 200 butterfly in 2:10.68. Kara Nelson from Paul Bergen's Thunderbolts placed second in 2:19.19.

The men/s 50 freestyle was spectacular, Mark Foster from Great Britain battled with the Dutch sprint elite, holders of the world best time in the long course 4x50 freestyle relay.

Pieter van den Hoogenband touched the wall first in 22.56, notching his third win of the meet. Foster just out-touched the number four from Barcelona, Johan Kenkhuis, 22.82 to 22.84). Mark Veens closely followed with 22.95.

The final of the 200 backstroke featured a race between Lukasz Wojt and Sander Ganzevles, since Marco di Carli had been disqualified in the prelims. The Polish swimmer turned first at the 50 meter mark, but Ganzevles took over and led all the way to the finish. Ganzevles clocked 2:02.74, to 2:03.55 for Wojt.

The 100 breaststroke produced another fine dual between Thijs van Valkengoed and Alexander Dale Oen from Norway. Oen turned half a second faster than the Dutchman, but he couldn't keep Van Valkengoed behind him. Van Valkengoed finished first and clocked 1:03.05, to 1:03.26 for Oen.

Pawel Korzeniowski highlights day 3 Swim Cup

AMSTERDAM (The Netherlands) April 3 - Pawel Korzeniowski highlighted the third day of the Amsterdam Swim Cup with his Polish record in the 200 fly. He clocked 1:56,89, a length ahead of Ioannis Drymonakos who turned first after the 100 mark. The Greek swam 1:58,59, enough to beat Lukasz Drzewinski from Poland (2:01,19), in by far the strongest field ever in The Netherlands on this event.

The Dutch stars were also present in Amsterdam, since this competition and the Nationals in two weeks, are the only meets left to qualify for the Olympics. Pieter van den Hoogenband has his ticket already, he cruised to 49:07 on the 100 meter freestyle.

No other Dutch swimmers could follow the Olympic Champion, only Denis Pimankow could reach his feet. Pimankow grabbed gold in Barcelona with his relay team on the 4x100 freestyle, he clocked 50,27 on this event in Amsterdam. Mark Veens swam 50,21 in the prelims, but he tored up his suit during the finals and finished fifth in 50,86.

The 400 IM was had an international top 8, with Lukasz Wojt finishing first for Poland in 4:20,95. Team-mate Pawel Korzeniowski followed with Ioannis Drymonakos from Greece, the numbers one and two from the 200 fly. The Greek won this time, clocking 4:23,53 to 4:26,50 for Korzeniowski.

The 50 backstroke had a close finish, Marco di Carli from Dirk Lange’s team from Germany touched first in 26,03, only 0,07 seconds ahead of David Ortega from Spain who lead from the start.

The women’s finals saw a clash between Inge de Bruijn and Marleen Veldhuis. De Bruijn hasn’t been beaten since the Europeans in 1999, but Veldhuis came very close today at the 50 meter freestyle. Both women swam side to side on the freestyle sprint, but it was De Bruijns experience that gave her the magic to touch first in 24,80, to the 24,96 of Veldhuis.

Inky is training seriously again for only five months now, so the 100 freestyle tomorrow is going to be a real test case for the triple Olympic Champion. Therese Alshammar is focussing on this sprint event for the Olympics and finished third in 25,45.

Moniek Nijhuis won the 100 breaststroke in 1:10,53, far ahead of the rest of the field. She swam a National Junior record an just missed qualifying for the Olympics by 0,68 seconds. Other winners were Marianna Lymperta on the 800 freestyle (8:51,61) and Katarzyna Staszak (2:17,11) on the 200 backstroke.

Inge qualifies for Athens during day 2 ASC

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands, April 2 - Inge de Bruijn and Pieter van den Hoogenband set great times during the sold-out second day of the Amsterdam Swim Cup. Hometown favourites Thijs van Vallkengoed and Ewout Holst won their events only finger length ahead of the strong international field.

After a magnificent official opening of the meet with a synchronized swimming team, the crowd was eager to see triple Olympic Champion Inge de Bruijn fly though the water. She swam a qualifying time for Athens during the heats already, clocking 58,99, but didn’t hold back in the final. Over a length ahead of the field, she touched the pad in 58,46.

“I did what I came for” said De Bruijn after qualifying for Athens, “To belong to the top of the world, it needs to go faster, but for now it’s a good time.”

In the first final Pieter van den Hoogenband made his appearance on the 200 freestyle. He qualified already for Athens and confirmed today that he will be starting at the European Championships in Madrid next month. In between hard training sessions, VdH swam 1:46,55 on the 200, half a second faster than last week in Eindhoven.

The rest of the field didn’t get under 1:50, but there was a close battle for second between Heiko Hell and Dimitros Manganas from Greece, the German finished in 1:50,60 to 1:50,64 for Manganas.

Dutchman Thijs van Valkengoed, supported by his fans club from De Dolfijn SPAX Amsterdam, finished just 0,01 ahead of his Polish rival Slawomir Kuczko on the 200 breaststroke. The triple European Junior Champion on the breaststroke finished in 2:17,59. Romanos Alyfantis from Greece finished third in 2:18,41.

Good backstrokers in Holland are very rare, Dutch record holder Klaas Erik Zwering scratched his final and is concentrating more on the freestyle events for Athens. Former German Mitja Zastrow, now swimming for The Netherlands, has a good backstroke, but because of injuries he hasn’t performed at 100% lately. The final showed a battle between Zastrow, Sander Ganzevles from Amsterdam, and David Ortega. The Spaniard turned first in 27,56. The two Dutch swimmers gained in the second 50, but couldn’t prevent Ortega taking gold in 56,84. Ganzevles finished second in 57,01, ahead of Zastrow (57,26).

Although the 50 butterfly is not an Olympic event, it showed a great field, with Mark Foster from Great Britain, Igor Martchenko from Russia and two Dutchmen, Joris Keizer and Ewout Holst battling for gold. Holst finished best, sprinting to 24,17. Foster couldn’t get the stroke rate up like Holst did, and ended in 24,41, just ahead of Keizer (24,50). Winner of the 100 fly Martchenko finished fourth in 24,94.

De Bruijn wasn’t the only woman who swam fast at the 100 butterfly, also 200 World Record holder Otylia Jedrzejczak was in the race to swim fast. The Polish swimmer finished second in 59,26, only 1,04 above her silver medal performance in Barcelona. The battle for the last Dutch Olympic ticket at this event is still undecided, Inge Dekker (1:00,31) and Chantal Groot (1:00,74) are both eager to get it.

Aleksandra Urbanczyk, a new talent from Poland, won the 200 IM in 2:17,81, just half a second above her time from Barcelona. Otylia Jedrzejczak won the 400 freestyle in 4:14,59, just after finishing second in the 100 fly. Zoi Dimoschaki (4:16,64) and Marianna Lymperta (4:17,30) finished second and third for Greece.

The 50 breaststroke is also a non-Olympic event, but the appearance of World Recordholder Zoe Baker made this a great event. Genna Patterson of Paul Bergen’s Thunderbolts dared to challenge her, but just mist finishing first. Baker finished in 32,36, but could match with her performance of last year (31,54). Patterson placed second in 32,54.

Amsterdam Swim Cup marks return De Bruijn

AMSTERDAM (The Netherlands) - Inge de Bruijn clocked 26:10 to win the 50 butterfly during the first day of the Amsterdam Swim Cup. Her race felt strong, but the real speed has yet to come. Qualifying for Athens is her main goal in Amsterdam, in the next days the triple Olympic gold medallist will start at the 50 and 100 free and 100 fly.

De Bruijn isn’t planning on retaking the World Record in the 100 freestyle from Lisbeth Lenton in this meet yet, but according to her coach Paul Bergen she should be able to swim under 53 in Athens. “Her world mark in the 100 freestyle was the easiest to break. She should have made this record more difficult to break in 2000. Someone who can swim 24,14 on the 50, should be able to realise a high 52 in the 100.”

The duel between Marleen Veldhuis and Otylia Jedrzejczak at the 200 freestyle was another highlight in this meet with a very strong international field. Hometown favourite Veldhuis lead from the start, but 200 fly world record holder Jedrzejczak touched the pad just 0,02 seconds ahead of Veldhuis in 2:00,76. Another member of the Polish national team, Paulina Barzycka, placed third in 2:01,88, just before Haike van Stralen (2:02,06).

Igor Martchenko had the best performance on the men’s site, taking the 100 butterfly in 53:30. The Russian got tough competition from Joris Keizer (53,94), but the Dutchman couldn’t match his 53,67 from two weeks ago.

Paul Bergen’s swimmer Ron Karnaugh didn’t make finals in the 200 IM, due to a disqualification. Bergen wasn’t very happy with this situation: “Ron doesn’t make faults with his experience, he just turns very fast.” In his absence, Lukasz Wojt from Poland took this event in 2:04,36, just ahead of Ioannis Drymonakos from the Greek National team (2:05,09)

Pawel Korzeniowski lead the international field in the 400 freestyle, touching first for Poland in 3:50,42. Dimitros Manganas (GRE) could follow in 3:51,14, a length ahead of Heiko Hell (3:53,92) from the German team of coach Dirk Lange.
